Exit polls are used to determine the results of an election before it has ended. Unlike opinion polls, which ask a voter who they plan to vote for, exit polls are taken as a voter finishes voting to see who they did choose.

Dr. Kathleen Frankovic is Director of Surveys and Producer for CBS News. In this video, she discusses the development of exit polls and their impact on understanding elections and projecting outcomes — including the run-up to and results of the 2010 United States’ mid-term elections.
