The way we find information has changed and is changing drastically everyday with the creation of new technology. Social networking, such as Digg and Delicious, have created new and more effective ways to collaborate and organize with anyone anywhere.
Michael Wesch is an Associate Professor of Cultural Anthropology at Kansas State University. Wesch is the man responsible for videos like, Web 2.0 The Machine is Us/ing Us, that have gained more popularity on the internet than Super Bowl Commercials. Wesch says the social revolution taking place outside the walls of the classroom, needs to step inside and be implemented in education as well.
Students, he says, used to have a question that was the driving force for their desire to learn; now that question is typically, “Will this be on the test?” He notes that students are spending more time on Facebook in the class than actually listening. That is because the way we find information is different now. Information is no longer scarce, but easily accessible, and so why would they not.
We need to adapt the classroom, because now anything can happen to anybody anytime anywhere.
