Susan Engel makes a controversial remark: she says we hate our children. But before you turn away from this video, take a moment to hear her out. She claims that this is because instead of following all findings that developmental psychologists (like herself) make, we pay more attention to our phones, feed them artificial foods, feels it’s fine for mothers to return to work when their children are very young, put them in inadequate day care, provide lousy educational resources in broke-down schools with unqualified teachers, and tell our kids they shouldn’t be teachers because they can do better and make more money.
Susan Engel is the Senior Lecturer in Psychology and Director of the Program in Teaching at Williams College. Her research focuses on narrative development, autobiographical memory, children’s play, teaching and learning in schools, and the development of curiosity.
Take a listen and then ask, could we be doing more for our children?
