Before coffee houses first appeared, the most common form of drink was alcoholic, because the water was not safe too drink. It was these new coffee shops that sparked the age of enlightenment. But, it was not only due to a switch from alcohol to coffee and tea that ignited these changes, but also to a new type of social environment where ideas could be exchanged.

It is these types of environments that columnist and author, Steven Johnson, says need to be put into effect in the workplace. Johnson also makes a compelling argument for why the secrecy of ideas needs to be eliminated and sharing needs to be implemented.
