This course looks at how Western cosmologies became “disenchanted,” magical tradition turned to modern mysticism, and how science before 1700 fitted elements that came eventually to be seen as magical. And it looks at science and religion as evolving historical phenomena. It also studies the political implications of these movements, and discusses science under totalitarian regimes and “big science” during the Cold War.
This course is taught by Courtenay Raia, who is a lecturer at UCLA.

Professor Courtenay Raia demystifies the realms of science, magic, and religion and the complex give-and-take between them over more than two millenia while simultaneously revivifying a sense of deep enchantment with the world and “mesmerizing” the viewer with her brilliance, wit, and charismatic appeal. An astonishing course of lectures!
