Vali Nasr, author of the new book, “Forces of Fortune, The Rise of the New Muslim Middle Class and What It Will Mean for Our World” has a different take than nearly everyone else on what it will take to muzzle Islamic extremism in the Middle East. He argues — and does so very convincingly — that the battle for the soul of Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan and other Islamic populations around the world, will not be fought over religion, but over capitalism and business by a rising Muslim middle class.

Countries that have a large middle class, tend to not have so problems with religious extremism. People in the middle class are too invested in creating wealth, and desire to hang on to that wealth, live a good and comfortable life, and pass it on to their children. Extremism does not fit into that lifestyle, and it does not play well with people that are trying to integrate with the rest of the world.
