When people discuss population growth, the debate usually sways to the problem either being the third world with their ever-expanding population, or the rich at their great use of global resources.

Roger Jeffery is a Professor of Sociology at the School of Social and Political Science at the University of Edinburgh. In this lecture, Jeffery looks to contextualize these positions within current demographic knowledge, and look at linkages to issues of food security, migration, economic development and human rights — and how a historical perspective helps with a better understanding of today’s concerns.
