John Milton is an English poet and author, best known for his epic, Paradise Lost. Milton’s work was controversial and had great influence on English poetry. This course focuses on Milton’s poetry, as well as a focus on his literary sources, his contemporaries, and his prose.
John Rogers is a Professor of English at Yale University, who also received his B.A. and Ph.D. from Yale. He is an expert on John Milton, having won the Modern Language Association First Book Prize and the Milton Society of America’s James Holly Handford Prize of Best Book for his book, The Matter of Revolution: Science, Poetry, and Politics in the Age of Milton.
In this course, Rogers discusses techniques and concerns of Milton criticism, historical and political contexts of Milton’s work, and in-depth readings.
