Forget IQ. It is a concept that has become irrelevant, says author Matt Ridley. It’s how well people communicate their ideas that makes us intelligent. By communicating effectively, our ideas are able to meet and mate — a natural selection of thoughts that weeds out the bad ones — which expands our collective brain.

Ridley says humans are the only species that have become better off from population growth. In fact, both our population and technology have shown exponential growth rates, which is due to more minds sharing and creating.

Our species has now come to a point where technology can do things beyond our capabilities. Tools, like stone axes, used to last thousands of years; tools today, like computers, become useless after two years because of the number of minds collaborating.

The key to progress and innovation is, ideas having sex.
