There have been thousands of books about political campaigns, so when Mark Halperin, journalist for Time Magazine, and John Heilemann, journalist for New York Magazine, decided they wanted to write about the 2008 presidential election, they knew they would have to find a new way to present the material. In this recent video, Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs, along with their Graduate School of Journalism, sat these authors down to discuss their popular book, Game Change.

Game Change is a political book that focuses less on politics and more on a candidate’s characters. The 2008 election was an exciting race with candidates from all walks of life in the race. Game Change set out to understand the strengths and weaknesses of candidate’s character traits and how that determined their success in running.

The race left a lot of unanswered questions that the book and this lecture attempt to answer. And for anyone interested in journalism, it provides great insight into covering political campaigns.
