The new “Pirates of the Caribbean” will soon be released, entitled “On Stranger Tides.” This will be the fourth film of a successful series created by Disney. But, these movies may be more than just box office entertainment, says Associate Teaching Professor in the Department of History, Roger Rouse.
In this lecture, Rouse describes how the series of films hijack complex histories of rebel piracy to incite conformity to corporate visions of life, labor and the world at large.
This is not the average talked you would hear about a Disney movie. Watching this before seeing the “On Stranger Tides” is a great way to add another element to the experience and engage in thinking more creatively about the cultural politics of contemporary capitalism.
