We know why we have thumbs, hair, and all the other wonderful physical characteristics that help us survive in the world…natural selection. But why do we have non-physical abilities like poetry, music, dance, storytelling, drawing, and architecture?

Darwin was obsessed with why the peacock had such large feathers. That is partly what led him to develop his theory on sexual selection. He found that those feathers were successful in attracting attention of the females.

So is it possible that the arts evolved to attract mates? That’s what Professor of Anthropology at Rutgers University, Helen Fisher, argues.
