This Yale history course covers the American Civil War, from the 1840s to 1877, and discusses its causes, course, and consequences. It also looks explore national, sectional, racial, constitutional, individual, social, intellectual, and moral meanings of the an event so defining of American history. Four themes are also analyzed: the union and disunion in a growing republic, slavery and emancipation, total war, and political and social challenges of Reconstruction.

The online history course is taught at Yale by Professor of American History, David Blight, who is the author of numerous books on the topic.
