Some, many actually, have called the 21st century, the century of China. We are entering the second decade now and from all appearances, China is on the path to fulfilling that title. But, China is a closed and secretive country, so we really need to access the knowledge of experts to gain analysis and insight into this growing power.
In early 2010, the Asian Studies Program at Case Western Reserve University did just that, when they presented a tremendous 3-lecture (four hours in total) series on China — its myths and realities. You can view all three parts right here.
How Fragile is China? (Part 1)
The speaker is Paul Schroeder, Visiting Professor in the Department of Political Science at Case Western Reserve University. He knows China well, as he has been active in the country for 30 years performing roles as journalist, businessman and scholar.
China: A Security Perspective
Speaker Albert S. Willner brings brings a difference perspective. He is the Director of the China Security Affairs Group at the Center for Naval Analyses (CNA), which is a federally funded research and development center serving the Department of the Navy and other defense agencies. Before that he was an Associate Dean at Georgia Gwinnett College. But prior to that it was all military. He’s a retired U.S. Army colonel, who completed his service as the first active-duty U.S. Defense Attaché equivalent since 1979 assigned to Taiwan. He has served in many Defense Department positions coordinating Asia-Pacific strategy, plans, and policy, and as the Director of International Relations and National Security Studies in the Department of Social Sciences at West Point.
Village Elections and Governance
This final lecture in the series brings an academic viewpoint to the conversation. Qingshan Tan — Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Political Science at Cleveland State University — Tan has published more than 30 academic articles in English and Chinese and is the author of the book, Village Elections in China: Democratizing the Countryside. His appointments include senior research fellow at the East Asian Institute of National University of Singapore, among others.
